The YCW works to create a society, which actively supports, respects and values the God given dignity of each person. We will consciously uphold basic human rights, especially the right to meaningful and just work. We will educate for global awareness and solidarity. Through taking action and reviewing in our communities, young people will discover the deepest meaning and mission of their lives.

YOUNG PEOPLE SPEAK OUT AT WYD08!

When World Youth Day came to Sydney, YCS and YCW were there, having fun, sharing faith and speaking up about the real issues confronting young people.

YCS and YCW hosted three events as part of the WYD08 Youth Festival.

Witness through Action. Young People and the Millennium Development Goals

Tuesday 15 July @ Customs House, Circular Quay.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are a series of targets, committed to by governments worldwide, which aim to halve poverty by the year 2015. In this workshop, young leaders from Asia, the Americas and the Middle East showed how they work to stop hunger, ensure universal education, fight HIV/ AIDS and promote the right to just work. Moved by their stories of action in the face of injustice, the young people present signed a 'Declaration of Commitment' to the MDGs.

Witness through Action was hosted by Caritas Australia, in collaboration with the International YCS, the International YCW, MIJARC and other international youth movements IMCS and IMCARY.

Act Today, Change Tomorrow: A New Generation of Apostles Speaks Out!

Wednesday 16 July @ the Big Top, Luna Park.

On Wednesday 16 July 1000 young people gathered at at Luna Park in Sydney to speak out about the struggles and injustices that young students and workers face in Australia and around the world. Together they called for a ‘radical re-evaluation of our priorities' to bring about a ‘new world' of love and justice for young people worldwide.

IYCS, IYCW and IMCS Members Gathering: The Power to Act

Thursday 17 July @ St Joseph's Catholic Church, Camperdown.

This international members gathering brought together members of YCS, YCW and IMCS from all over the world. Participants shared with each other about their campaigns and realities, and reflected together on their call to live the Gospel in action.

At WYD in Sydney, YCS and YCW also hosted a stall as part of the Vocations Expo in Darling Harbour, to let pilgrims and passers-by know all about our movements.

YCS and YCW WYD08 events were run by young workers and students from all around Australia and the world. We wish to thank all our guests speakers, volunteers and participating pilgrims for sharing their time and their stories.

For more info on any of the events above contact the WYD Coordinator, Chantelle Ogilvie at chantelle.ogilvie@ycw.org.au
